The 2006 ISPAD postgraduate course was organized in Santiago, Chile, in collaboration with GELADNA, ALAD and SOCHEM (Sociedad Chilena de Endocrinología y Metabolismo). Around 200 participants from all over South and Latin America came to this event, most of them pediatricians working in diabetes care, but also diabetes nurses and some psychologists and dieticians. Approximately 80% of the participants were from Chile. The faculty represented the whole region, coming from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and of course Chile.

The third ISPAD Science School 2006 for Health Professionals will be held in Cambridge, UK, immediately prior to the annual ISPAD Congress.
The 3 day meeting is designed for nurses, dietitians, psychologists and podiatrists who have or wish to develop a research interest in diabetes in young people. The School is designed
to give participants some understanding of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative statistics and to provide constructive discussion about research projects currently being undertaken or considered.

ISPAD 2006 is the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society for Pediatric & Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). This annual Scientific Meeting is where people committed to the work for children and adolescents with diabetes, come together to share their knowledge on a broad range of issues in diabetes.

The programme will include plenary symposia, oral and poster abstract presentations, poster discussions, interactive workshops, small group learning sessions and an exciting range of activities away from the lecture theatres. The focus will be on the latest information in the areas of basic and clinical research and on the application of this information to clinical practice.

The 33rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) will take place in Berlin from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th September 2007.

The ISPAD Annual Meeting is a great opportunity for all professionals involved in the science and care for children with diabetes to “network” with colleagues from all over the world. The special atmosphere of Berlin, Germany’s rapidly transforming capital at the cultural and financial intersection between East and West, will inspire you to cultivate old connections and to make new friendships.

The challenges and therapeutic options for youth with diabetes are developing at a rapid pace, but emotional issues should not be overlooked. As 2007 will be proclaimed as the “Year of the Child with Diabetes” the motto of the Meeting will be “Diabetes in Motion”. We hope to move ahead in Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetology by making the best of our new chances without giving up past achievements.

Fellows and junior faculty will be able to learn the latest clinical and clinically relevant research topics in a relaxed setting with faculty and students presenting both interesting cases and research plans. Topics to be covered by the faculty include genetics and immunology of type 1 diabetes, epidemiology of diabetes, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance in children, risk factors for complications, and approaches to clinical translational research. Faculty will be available to provide research advice in didactic sessions and in more informal meetings.

The 2009 Science School for Physicians will be hosted by the Department of Paediatrics, University of Cambridge and will take place between the 15th and 20th November 2009 at Madingley Hall, Cambridge, UK. Deadline for applications is 15th April 2009.

The syllabus will cover a range of core topics including the pathophysiology of diabetes, epidemiology, genetics, complications risk, clinical trials and statistical methods, and will be supported by a faculty of internationally renowned experts from the Institute of Metabolic Sciences, University of Cambridge together with external speakers. Set in the historic and relaxed environment of Madingley Hall, near Cambridge, students will have the opportunity to explore and develop their research ideas under the tutelage of the resident faculty.
