38th Annual Meeting of ISPAD, October 10th – 13th, 2012 (Istanbul, Turkey)

This meeting was a great success with 1,345 delegates from 88 countries, 126 persons from Turkey. The meeting was held in the friendly ISPAD atmosphere in the Istanbu Conference Center. Many thanks to Åžükran Darcan and Damla GökÅŸen, their local Organizing Committee (Hülya Günöz, Rüveyde Bundak, Sükrü Hatun, Nurgün Kandemir, Ece Böber, Atilla Büyükgebiz, Abdullah Bereket, and Yasemin Atik Altonok), the Scientific Committee (Lynda K. Fisher, Sükran Darcan, Damla Göksen, Carlo Acerini, Jeremy Allgrove, Maria Craig, Knut Dahl-Jorgensen, and Neil White), the abstract review committee, the local Conference Company and KIT for your hard work in making this happen! ISPADÂ´s prizes for 2012 were presented at the meeting. The ISPAD Prize for Achievement is the Society’s highest honor. It is awarded to any individual who has made outstanding contributions in the areas of SCIENCE, EDUCATION or ADVOCACY which have had a major impact on childhood and adolescent diabetes. The ISPAD Prize for Achievement (sponsored by Eli Lilly) may be awarded to members or non-members of ISPAD.
The 2012 Prize for Achievement was awarded to Mark Sperling from USA. The ISPAD Lestradet Prize for Education and Advocacy (sponsored by Lifescan) was awarded to Mohamed Abdullah from Sudan; the ISPAD Young Investigator Award (sponsored by Medtronic) was awarded to Oscar Rubio-Cabezas from Madrid, Spain. The ISPAD Prize for Innovation in Pediatric Diabetes Care (Sponsored by NovoNordisk within their DAWN™ Youth Initiative) went to Nick Woolfield from Queensland, Australia for his project: The Paediatric Diabetes Electronic Care Plan (eCare Plan).
Fergus J. Cameron (Australia) received the Best Oral Presentation Award for presenting “Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A disease of Psyche and Soma” (Oral Session V, Abstract No. 517). Muhammed Yazid Jalaludin (Malaysia) received the Best Poster Award for presenting “One in Five Overweigth / Obeses Adolescents in the Community has Metabolic Syndrome” (Poster No. 496).
