The 3 day meeting is designed for nurses, dietitians, psychologists, social workers and podiatrists (not MD’s) who have or wish to develop a research interest and expertise in diabetes in young people. The School will give participants an understanding of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative statistics and will provide constructive discussion about research projects currently being undertaken or considered.

What is ISPAD ?
Globally, diabetes is a disease in evolution affecting more and more children and adolescents. ISPAD is a professional organization whose aims are to promote clinical and basic science, education and advocacy in childhood and adolescent diabetes. The strength of ISPAD lies in the scientific and clinical expertise in childhood and adolescent diabetes of its members. ISPAD is the only international society focusing specifically on all types of childhood diabetes. All forms of diabetes treatment in childhood should be based upon scientific evidence or clinical consensus. Parents are urged to contact their doctor regarding any type of treatment to take part of the evidence for it. Who may become an ISPAD member ? Full Members of ISPAD are medical health professionals (pediatricians, internists and other disciplines), non-medical health professionals and scientists committed to clinical care, education, research or advocacy relevant to children and adolescents with all forms of diabetes mellitus. Our activities include: The Annual Scientific Meeting is held yearly in different international locations. ISPAD publishes Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines for the management of diabetes in children and adolescents. Click here to access the 2000 edition. The next edition will be published 2006/2007 in Pediatric Diabetes. The ISPAD Science School offers research training in the field of diabetes for young doctors. ISPAD Science School for Health Professionals is organized for nurses, dietitians, psychologists and other allied health professionals. The ISPAD Rare Diabetes Collection provides clinical details on rare types of diabetes, as well as serving as a repository of stored DNA for research. Other activities include postgraduate courses, particularly in less developed countries, scientific symposia, workshops and training programs, facilitation of collaborative studies, individual training programs, assistance with other organizations and societies in promoting education and research on childhood and adolescent diabetes mellitus as well as raising public awareness about diabetes mellitus. Fellows and junior faculty will be able to learn the latest clinical and clinically relevant research topics in a relaxed setting with faculty and students presenting both interesting cases and research plans. Topics to be covered by the faculty include genetics and immunology of type 1 diabetes, epidemiology of diabetes, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance in children, risk factors for complications, and approaches to clinical translational research. Latest News2006/2007 ISPAD Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines Drafts
The first chapters have now been published in the December 2006 issue of Pediatric Diabetes. The draft chapters are for viewing and comments by ISPAD members to make our guidelines a true consensus.

Send comments, questions and suggestions to our membership mail members@ispad.org with a copy to the editor of respective chapter (address is listed in the chapter head). We have set a deadline of 2 weeks for commenting on each chapter after it has been circulated among the members. ISPAD´s prizes for 2007 were presented at the annual meeting in Berlin, Germany. The ISPAD Prize for Achievement is the Society’s highest honour. It is awarded to any individual who has made outstanding contributions in the areas of SCIENCE, EDUCATION or ADVOCACY which have had a major impact on childhood and adolescent diabetes. The ISPAD Prize for Achievement (sponsored by Eli Lilly) may be awarded to members or non-members of ISPAD.
The 2007 Prize for Achievement was awarded to Teruo Kitagawa, Tolkyo, Japan. The ISPAD Young Investigator Award (sponsored by Medtronic) was awarded to Helge Ræder, Bergen, Norway, and the ISPAD Lestradet Prize for Education and Advocacy (sponsored by Lifescan) was awarded to Marg McGill, Sydney, Australia. |
