Joint Interview with Sabine Hofer and Joseph Wolfsdorf

(Interview conducted by Jamie Wood - ISPAD Communication Advisor)

The theme of the 2017 ISPAD Meeting in Innsbruck is «Reaching for the Summit»; why did you choose this theme and how is it reflected in the program?

Our goal is to reach for the summits in diabetes research and diabetes care both for physicians and non-physician health care professionals. Our program includes several important topics related to the provision of optimum care for children with diabetes. The program includes e-learning and social media as novel tools for diabetes education and communication; how close is the development of a closed loop system; a discussion about which targets we need to aim for in diabetes care, and our progress towards achieving a cure.
As the congress city Innsbruck is located in the heart of the Alps surrounded by magnificent mountain summits (as you might have seen on our invitation video http://2017.ispad.org/) the motto is appropriate to the theme of our work and congress program as well as the physical environment where we will convene.

Are there any new additions to the meeting format this year that attendees can expect?

In addition to the familiar and well-established formats of plenary sessions and symposia, we have scheduled meet-the-expert sessions focusing even more on important practical issues such as, for example, communication skills in paediatrics and management of toddlers with diabetes in different parts of the world. Furthermore, we have ensured that poster presentations – paper as well as e-posters – will receive more attention at our meeting. The congress center has an impressive poster area located next to the ISPAD lounge. We believe this will enhance the ability of delegates to interact and communicate with researchers, colleagues and friends.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2017 ISPAD Meeting in Innsbruck?

This years´ networking evening will be the perfect place for the ISPAD family to meet in a relaxed atmosphere – a mixture of lounge, seated dinner and “clubbing” awaits the attendees.
For the first time we want to include a public children´s event at ISPAD – on Saturday we are very much looking forward to bring together our children with Will Cross a well-known American mountain climber and motivational speaker!

If meeting attendees pick one thing to do or see in Innsbruck, what would you recommend?

Reaching the summit by exploring the ´Nordkette´ - the jewel of the alps! The panorama cable car will transport visitors directly from the congress venue to high mountain terrain in just twenty minutes (http://www.nordkette.com/en/home.html).

Can you give us a sneak peek into the Opening Ceremony?

We look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world and will be offering a stroll through Tyrolean and Austrian culture. I am personally very excited to showcase my home town. It is the perfect venue for an international conference.
