"I am a member because I am interested in pediatric and adolescent diabetes. ISPAD is the only organization worldwide concerned with providing children and adolescents with diabetes care.

Since I Joined ISPAD in 2011 and attended the Istanbul conference in 2012, I have learned a lot from ISPAD guidelines, the meeting, and the members' forum exchanging their experiences by e-mail - correspondence which has now stopped.

I am working in diabetes care of young people for a long time. I have followed many patients with diabetes from childhood and adolescence to their adulthood. I learned to work with limited resources in a low-income country where patients and their families are not always able to pay out of their pocket money the expenses of management of diabetes and its complications because they are not covered by insurance. I have seen young patients suffering from worse microvascular outcomes of type 1 diabetes at young age, like severe diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy with various degrees visual impairment, diabetic nephropathy and death from kidney failure, and severe diabetic neuropathy with Charcot's neuroarthropathy of both feet.

I hope ISPAD, in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, can help children and adolescents with
type 1 diabetes in low-income countries. ISPAD can make a step forward by asking these
international organizations to help them."
