ISPAD Young Investigator Award

Petter Bjornstad

Has won the ISPAD Young Investigator Award 2017

Dr. Petter Bjornstad is a clinical researcher with a track record of research potential and success. His research focus is on metabolic and hemodynamic mechanisms underlying the development of diabetic kidney disease in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Despite his early career stage, his expertise in the area has been recognized by major research groups including Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 Diabetes (CACTI) Study, Determinants of Macrovascular Disease Risk in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes, Resistance to Insulin in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes (RESISTANT) Study, Canadian Study of Longevity in Diabetes (Longevity), and Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) which have invited Dr. Bjornstad to join them as a co-investigator. Dr. Bjornstad has more than 50 publications, and serves as academic editor of PLOS ONE.

Dr. Bjornstad is principal investigator of the recently completed “Effect of Urinary Alkalinization on Urine Uric Acid Precipitation and Crystallization in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes (Alk-UA)”. The purpose of the clinical trial was to determine whether alkalinization of urine uric acid by 2 doses of sodium bicarbonate (1950mg each) over 24-hours reduces fractional excretion of uric acid and urine uric acid concentration, precipitation and crystallization in adults with type 1 diabetes. He is also principal investigator of the ongoing “Diabetic Kidney Alarm Study – Tubulopathy in New Onset Diabetic Ketoacidosis” for which he received the ISPAD-JDRF fellowship and Thrasher Early Career Awards. Dr. Bjornstad theorizes that diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition associated with dehydration, metabolic acidosis and acute glycaemia, will be associated with tubular injury, which would present the earliest evidence of kidney disease in type 1 diabetes. The importance of this proposal relates to the major research and clinical need to better understand the initiating events contributing to early diabetic kidney disease in youth with type 1 diabetes.
