More Information
I am a clinical psychologist with a specialization in pediatric psychology, and a tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Children’s National Health System and George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. I have extensive experience working with adolescents, young adults, and parents in a medical setting. As a psychologist, I am trained in adolescent and young adult development and the challenges of managing a chronic illness during this changing developmental period; I am also a certified diabetes educator. My research has been supported by NIH and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Children’s National and has primarily evaluated self-care skills in youth with type 1 diabetes and specific risk and protective factors associated with behavioral adherence to medical regimens. My recent research has specifically focused on health communication between adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes and their health care providers. We successfully recorded medical clinic visits for a sample of late adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes, coding the content and quality of communication using a validated observational coding system. We also completed qualitative interviews to further reflect on the importance of communication with care providers. Results from my ongoing research will inform clinical care, including the promotion of effective strategies to promote adherence to diabetes care regimens and readiness for adult medical care.
