ISPAD notes the passing of Professor Jean Jacques Robert

Jean Jacques has been a phenomenon in the field of pediatric diabetes.

His career as successor of  Professor  Henri Lestradet (co-founder of ISPAD/ISGD with Zvi Laron (Israel) and Helmut Loeb (Brussels) in Necker-Enfants Malades, the reference Pediatric Hospital in Paris), as well as his role in the Aide aux Jeunes Diabétiques (of which he was President after Henri Lestradet) has been widely recognized.

Scientifically relevant work, but as well his focus on the young person with diabetes has characterised him throughout his working life. He has been involved in patient education and the development of educational tools to improve the methodologies to teach. Until recently, he has been active in the discussion and teaching of health care professionals around the globe, always with focus, and kindness. He has been part of many international collaborative research groups, such as the Hvidoere Study Group, SWEET and many more.

He has attended probably the most ISPAD conferences, often accompanied by his wife Ghislaine. They have both been instrumental in the translation of the ISPAD guidelines into French.  Within ISPAD, he was honoured in 2014 with the Lestradet prize, for outstanding achievement in the field of Education and Advocacy.

He will be deeply missed by his friends, his colleagues and the many patients he cared for.  Our thoughts are with his wife Ghislaine, and his daughter Maëlle.

As one of the slightly younger ‘old boys’ I want to add my tribute to Jean Jacques. I was definitely young when I joined ISPAD and from the beginning, I regarded him as a friend. He always went out of his way to make people feel welcome and his quiet, undemonstrative style was something I always admired but could never emulate. I will miss him. Kenneth Robertson, Scotland

I am saddened by the passing of a friend, colleague, diabetes leader, Jean Jacques Robert. My condolences and best wishes to Ghislaine. To me Jean Jacques embodied the vision of ISPAD: a thoughtful academic who cared; a tireless and engaged advocate for his patients; but most importantly a real gentleman and all-round good guy! He made a difference and he will be missed. Denis Daneman, Toronto.

Professor Jean Jacques Robert What sad news. I greatly appreciated my friendship with Jean Jacques who was a stalwart servant of ISPAD, giving sage advice and comment. He will be missed by all of the ISPAD Community. Stephen Greene
