16th ISPAD Science School for Health Care Professionals

“This is probably the best professional opportunity I have ever had. It has opened to my eyes to endless possibilities and ideas, and inspired me to do more research and not waste this experience” stated one of the students.

The 16th ISPAD Science School for Health Care Professionals took place from October 27 to 29, in Boston, USA, in the framework of the ISPAD’s 45th Annual Conference.

15 participants from Australia, USA, UK, India, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Albania, Italy, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates and Norway have participated in this three-day programme focused on developing research projects. The SSHP 2019 have welcomed professional with different backgrounds: 1 pharmacist, 2 clinical psychologists, 1 social worker, 4 dietitians, 7 diabetes educators/nurses.

Participants have presented projects on a range of subject areas. From developing support in schools in Lithuania, examining the impact of diabetes on dental health, assessing mental health at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, measuring the impact of socio-economic status on structured education in India, exploration of HCP perceived barriers to accessing technology in lower socioeconomic groups, analyzing the impact of diabetes camp in Costa Rica on glycaemic management and diabetes distress to the comparison of two different amounts of carbohydrate intake on time in range during aerobic exercise in adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes. The Faculty Science School Team 2019 was integrated by Francesca Annan (University College London Hospitals, UK) Lena Hanberger (Linköping University, Sweden), Megan Paterson (John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Newcastle, Australia), Farid Mahmud (Hospital for Sick Children,Toronto, Canada) and Timothy Skinner (Københavns Universitet Copenhagen, Denmark). 

Organized and funded by Abbott and ISPAD, the Science School is a foundation course in research methodology designed for allied healthcare professionals who have or wish to develop a research interest in diabetes in children and adolescents. To be eligible for the course you must be an ISPAD member and a non-medical healthcare professional (dietitian, nurse, clinical psychologist, social worker) with at least 3 years’ experience working with children and adolescents with diabetes.
