A message from ISPAD's President

Many of us were able to participate in ISPAD’s 45th Annual Conference in Boston. Congratulations to the Co-Presidents Lori Laffel and Joe Wolfsdorf and their committees for an outstanding scientific event. It was also a very happy and positive meeting. I was pleased to launch the ISPAD/JDRF Global Partnership to improve access to Type 1 Diabetes management globally. We were pleased to host a contingent of health professionals from Central & South America in partnership with Life For a Child. Professor Mark Sperling was a well-received Guest Mentor for the Science School for Healthcare Professionals and for the JENIOUS group. We also welcomed the Diabetes Online Community to our meeting; and many enjoyed the sun coming up over the Charles River as they participated in the Active@ISPAD 5K Charity Run on the last day.

Congratulations to the election of our new Advisory Council Members: Julia van Oettingen (Canada), Roque Cardona-Hernandez (Spain) and Helen Phelan (Australia). We farewelled with great thanks the work of our retiring Council members:  Valentino Cherubini (Italy), Francesca Annan (UK), who has also led the Science School for Health Professionals and Eda Cengiz (USA) who led the Prize and Fellowship Committees.

For the Executive Board, we welcome Carine de Beaufort (Luxembourg) as President-Elect and Jamie Wood (USA) as Secretary-General Elect; and Eduardo Calliari (Brazil) as Communications Director. We farewelled and acknowledged the hard work of Andrea Scaramuzza (Italy) after 4 years as Treasurer; Jamie Wood (USA) after 3 years as the inaugural Communications Director; and Joe Wolfsdorf (US) as President and Past President. Membership has climbed under these great leaders (membership now in 98 countries) and our profile has risen.

Thanks to all the Speakers, Chairpeople and presenters who contributed so much to the meeting. Thanks to our Platinum Sponsors (Dexcom, Lilly, Sanofi) Silver Sponsors (Insulet, Medtronic, Novo Nordisk) and General sponsors (Abbott, Xeris).

Thank you to K.I.T. Group for supporting all we do, including sourcing head-dresses for the Executive Board so the Speakers from North America would not miss their families so much at Halloween.

We welcomed Anouk Rey who has taken over senior management.

ISPAD 2019:

“The future of pediatric diabetes care and research starts NOW!”

By all accounts, the 45th Annual Conference of ISPAD at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston, attended by 1,170 delegates from 78 countries, was a resounding success. The opening ceremony featured a memorable performance by the Harvard Krokodiloes, the a cappella group consisting of twelve talented undergraduate men whose repertoire includes popular music of the Great American Songbook.

Each day commenced with an outstanding plenary session by world renowned scientists, followed by simultaneous symposia on a broad array of topics, and oral presentations of new science. Well attended, outstanding industry-sponsored symposia filled the lunch breaks, followed by poster tours and additional parallel symposia in the afternoon. Many delegates had difficulty choosing among the numerous exciting parallel sessions. It is important to know, however, that thanks to an independent educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company all the presentations were recorded and will be available for viewing on the ISPAD's Conference Resource Platform. After the Annual General Assembly on Friday afternoon, a very enjoyable networking and recognition dinner took place at the Hard Rock café where those with exceptional stamina kept the evening going until the wee hours of Saturday morning. After three and a half days of exhilarating science and networking, the meeting closed on Saturday with a spectacular JDRF-sponsored symposium on “Closing the Loop”, a view into the imminent future of pediatric diabetes care. We are particularly grateful to our numerous corporate partners for their continued support and to the 57 faculty from 14 countries for their hard work and superb presentations.

Asma Deeb and her scientific committee are already fully engaged in preparing for the 46th annual ISPAD conference to be held at the world class ADNEC congress center in Abu Dhabi, October 14-17, 2020. We hope to see you there!

ISPAD 2020 - Save the Date!

Don’t forget to save the date for ISPAD 2020!

Date: October 14-17, 2020
Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

ISPAD will be going to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for its Annual Conference in 2020. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and at the same time the second-most populous city of this country. It is the country's center of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial center. Once you enter Abu Dhabi, you’ll probably gasp over this amazingly modern city, rich in skyscrapers, malls, top of the line buildings and contemporary roads and public facilities. Abu Dhabi is also among the safest cities in the world to travel to.

ISPAD is both honored and fortunate to have Professor Asma Deeb as the local convener of ISPAD's Annual Conference 2020.

Asma Deeb is Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology and Clinical Professor at Mafraq Hospital and Gulf University in United Arab Emirates but found time earlier this year to start laying the foundations for next year’s event.

ADNEC is one of the highest profile congress centers in the region. The easy to navigate layout, hi-tech infrastructure and intelligent design are simply ideal for the ISPAD Conference. In fact the building is so inspiring you should not be surprised to see some innovative session types and creative uses of communal space at next year's event.
