A message from ISPAD's President

The Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us. This is a difficult time and constantly changing. We need to discard our fears, and remain logical, careful and calm. We need to stay on task, be responsible and encourage our patients. Pleasingly our colleagues in Italy and Middle East report that the children and adolescents with diabetes have not been adversely affected by infection, and many centers are using telemedicine for routine reviews rather than face to face consultations. Indeed just prior to ATTD in Madrid, there was a working party on "The Digital Clinic" led by Tadej Battelino and Moshe Phillip which was very timely.

JDRF have some great links for advice:

The 6th ASPED-ISPAD-Lilly Diabetes Academy scheduled to be held in Bahrain has been rescheduled to October immediately before our ISPAD Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi. We welcome the delegates to our meeting. The conference is definitely going ahead at this stage and registrations are now open. We are monitoring the situation continuously.

2020 is the year ISPAD especially celebrates education with 20 years of the ISPAD Science Schools for Physicians. Many of you have been involved and it is a time for reflection and celebration. We are all educators, most of us enjoy teaching. Are we good teachers? What makes a memorable learning moment and how can we do better?
First Science School for Physicians in Berlin, 2000.
In postgraduate education in Africa, Neela Ray (from London, UK) spent two weeks teaching in February at PETCWA in Lagos representing ISPAD. The ASPAE Summer School has recently been held in Botswana with ISPAD representation by Chizo Agwu and Joe Wolfsdorf.

On a different education note, my University, University of Sydney, in its celebration of International Women's Day this month was proud that the first woman to study Medicine began in 1885, and then quoted from one of the Founders of our Medical School reflecting the views of the time: "Within certain limits, women have played a useful part in medical life" but advised whether a girl should study medicine "They would be much better employed if they got a nice frock and a nice man". How far have we come! More than half of ISPAD members are female!

Please spend your time wisely, and keep preparing your abstracts for submission to our Annual Congress in Abu Dhabi. We have opened up a Forum for discussion on COVID-19, I suggest you sign up!

Dear Colleagues,

The ISPAD Communications Committee would like to start a forum discussion for diabetes providers to discuss how the unprecedented global pandemic of COVID-19 is affecting their patients with diabetes.

Please share any clinical observations of the virus' impact on children, adolescents and young adults with diabetes. Please share any developing best practices from your unit's experience thus far. We are especially interested in hearing from providers from countries that have seen large surges of patients into the health care system.

Children with Diabetes and ISPAD 20 Year Celebratory Dinner

The occasion was entitled “20 years of making a difference for children and adolescents living with diabetes”. This was a great occasion when we celebrated 20 years of ISPAD and Children With Diabetes working together. The speakers included Children with Diabetes Board Members: Jeff Hitchcock (the founder), Dr. George Grunberger, Kerri Sparling (PWD/mother/ author), Marissa Hitchcock Town (PWD and catalyst for CWD), Prof. Fiona Campbell (UK National Quality Improvement Programme) and Prof. David Maahs celebrating 20 years of Science Schools.

More than 100 people from 16 countries attended, and we finished with an astonishing Spanish birthday cake.

Many thanks to Sylvia Lyon, Mike Swearingen, Jeff Hitchcock for the organization, and for the generous support of Dexcom Inc., Tandem Diabetes, and Abbott Diabetes Care.

CWD donated $25 per attendee to Life for A Child.

ISPAD Session at ATTD 2020

The ISPAD-ATTD joint symposium titled “Unmet Technology Needs in Pediatric Diabetes” was held February 18, 2020 in Madrid, Spain.  Three speakers gave perspectives from their regions: Dr. Roque Cardona-Hernandez “Unmet technology needs in minority people in Europe”, Dr. Asma Deeb “Unmet technology needs in Arabic region, Africa and Asia”, and Dr. Priya Prahalad “Unmet technology needs in minority people in North and South America”.

Chapter 15: Management of children and adolescents with diabetes requiring surgery

Surgery is a challenge for all – a patient with diabetes, family, diabetes team, and the medical team of surgeons, nurses, and anesthetists. This challenging situation requires trust that the medical team will manage diabetes-related tasks well – during the surgery and after, and that the poor control of diabetes will not affect the healing process.

This ISPAD chapter is crucial for all health-care professionals who take care of a patient with diabetes during surgical procedures. It covers topics like recommended blood glucose values during and after surgery and considers different types of insulin regimes.
