A message from ISPAD's President

We continue to live and work in a time of ambiguity and uncertainty with COVID-19. We need to remember all the great things that we have done in the past, and and focus on what we do now and in the future.

ISPAD congratulates Past President Zvi Laron on the recent opening of the Zvi Laron Library at Tel Aviv University. He has been a pioneer in Pediatric Endocrinology globally and indeed a founding member for ISGD (International Study Group for Pediatric Diabetes) in 1974. He was ISGD’s first Secretary General 1975-1979, and President 1993-1996 while Stu Brink was Secretary-General, and thus oversaw the transitioning to ISPAD. It is planned for some ISGD and ISPAD Memorabilia to be available there.

The awaited ISPAD JDRF survey is now active, “The global state of T1D”. We plan to have an update of the survey and other results with early action plans at our 46th Annual Conference in October.

Thank you for submitting abstracts for our Annual Conference, we received a record number for a virtual meeting: 220 abstracts. We look forward to their presentation during our 46th Annual Conference in October 15-17. Please organize your clinics so that you can fully participate in ISPAD 2020 Virtual: Connecting. Collaborating. Caring. "A better world for children, adolescents and people with diabetes".

2020 is the year ISPAD marks 20 years of education with the Science Schools. I include a photo of the 6th ISPAD Science School for Physicians in 2005 convened by Joe Wolfsdorf in Boston.

ISPAD-JDRF Survey: The Global State of T1D

The ISPAD-JDRF survey is now active, “The global state of T1D”, designed to better understand health outcomes and access to care of people living with Type 1 Diabetes globally. The goal is to equip patients and health professionals with fresh new evidence that will help secure the resources they need. In the lead-up to the centenary of insulin’s discovery, these data will help the global community sound the call for change. The survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete in the next three weeks, by August 12.

It is planned to have an update of the survey and other results with early action plans at our 46th Annual Conference in October. There are also opportunities for you to get involved right now, e.g. providing commentary on initial results (e.g. for your country) and helping develop action plans for health professionals. You can indicate your interest in the survey itself or by reaching out directly to Jami Goodman (jgoodman@jdrf.org).

Take the survey

COVID-19 Outbreak & Pediatric Diabetes - Survey Results Online!

2020 will be remain in our memory as the year of the pandemic with a huge impact on individuals, families, societies, and healthcare.

How have healthcare professionals and young people with diabetes in their care as well as their families perceived this?

To collect some insights, in early April our Egyptian colleague Nancy Elbarbary proposed a survey amongst healthcare professionals (HCP) that care for children with diabetes, to document their perceptions, challenges and experience during this period. This was realized as a team effort; with over 200 centers in 75 countries that participated.  A big thanks to all of you who filled out this survey!

The good news is the mild/moderate symptomatology in children with diabetes (as opposed to adults with diabetes) and increased use of telecommunication. More details on the outcome and the reported challenges are now published in Pediatric Diabetes.

Health care professionals, exercise and type 1 diabetes questionnaire

The ISPAD group of young investigators (JENIOUS) and the organization DiAthlete have joined forces to create a questionnaire to evaluate the global range of knowledge and attitudes towards exercise prescribed to children (and their carers) and young people with type 1 diabetes.

Please support us with your valuable answers to our type 1 diabetes and exercise questionnaire to help generate an impact towards the strategies in which healthcare professionals are trained in this field and share it with your friends/colleagues who take care of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
