ISPAD NEWS No. VIII / August 2020

A message from ISPAD's President

We are now into the eighth month of the COVID Marathon. Please remain COVID-safe and not COVID-shy. We need to stay connected. Our 46th Annual Conference has the theme of Connecting, Collaborating, Caring. It is a new adventure which I hope you will share with us and colleagues.

The time zone for ISPAD 2020 Virtual is CDT (Chicago). You may wonder how to schedule. I know of one group who are planning to meet together in real time in Australia (which means the fun time of 10 pm on Thursday, no clinics on Friday). For those with different planning ideas, the invited sessions will be recorded and webcasted along with the Chairpersons’ moderation as well as the Q&A chat. The advantage of viewing in real time will be the opportunity to interact: and the speakers will be available in real time to communicate. Please review the
Scientific Program  to recognise what high power speakers we have. We will have oral sessions of submitted abstracts harmonized with Plenaries and Symposia; as well as ePosters and interactive debates with Special Interest Groups. The deadline for the Standard Registration fee is September 2, so please register soon and reschedule your clinics.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the ISPAD Prize Winners for 2020:

Achievement Prize: Tadej Battelino
Lestradet Award: Sheridan Waldron
Innovation Prize: Henk J. Aanstoot and Henk Veeze
Young Investigator: Elisa De Franco
ISPAD Hero Award:  Lee Ducat and Carol Lurie

Thank you to the people who have already completed the ISPAD/JDRF Survey “The global state of T1D”.  If you have not done so, I encourage you to please do so in the next few days so that we can together have the data for the next steps to leverage support for better resources. The deadline to
participate in this survey was extended until August 24, 09:00 CET.

This year ISPAD will also introduce some exciting webinars starting next month, watch for details.

The ISPAD Science School featured below is that from 2010 convened by Neil White in St Louis.

COVID-19 & Diabetes

Covid-19 Diabetes Supply Chain Coalition

The pandemic has caused many problems for diabetes centres in less-resourced countries. Common themes are families struggling to buy sufficient food, lives imperilled (and sadly some lost) by late presentation of Diabetes Ketoacidosis (DKA) in existing cases, transport and distribution issues, need for PPE for health professionals and families, and emergency insulin and strip needs.

Coronavirus Diabetes Working Group

COVID and Diabetes Working Group is a collaboration of JDRF, Beyond Type 1, ADA , ISPAD and others aimed to develop updates for current COVID recommendations (April edition ); including the relationship of diabetes and COVID-19 outcomes, how to return to work or school safely and caring for those living with diabetes under some form of lock down, and adapting to a wider range of countries.

My Friend Diabetes Camp - Virtual Edition

“My Friend Diabetes Camps” have been held in İznik (Nicaea) since 1997 and in Diyarbakır since 2011 (since 2016 as a united camp in Iznik) to improve the education and health of children with diabetes. In addition to these, the “My Friend Diabetes Family Camp” has been running in Uludağ, Turkey since 2018.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic currently affecting the whole world, the camp will this year take place on a virtual platform between August 16-21. The camp will operate through Microsoft Teams and Instagram and it is expected that at least 5,000 people will join.

ISPAD Guidelines 2018 – Highlighted Chapter: Type 2 Diabetes

Chapter 3: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus in youth
Type 2 diabetes prevalence is increasing in youth, and requires health-care professionals and diabetes teams to better understand the challenge of type 2 diabetes in the pediatric population. These chapter guidelines more fully take into account the findings of the TODAY study, SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study, and the Pediatric Diabetes Consortium. Most importantly, the guidelines align closely with the first-ever ADA Statement on the Evaluation and Management of Type 2 Diabetes in Youth which was recently finalized and will be published in Diabetes Care.

This chapter is a must read for every health care provider who cares for the youth with type 2 diabetes.
