Cairo, Egypt, April 14-15, 2016

The 10th International conference of the Egyptian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ESPED) organized in collaboration with International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD)

The 10th international conference of the Egyptian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ESPED) was held in collaboration with the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes on April 14th and 15th 2016 in one of the prestigious hotels in Cairo, Egypt.  The scientific meeting was organized under the theme "Type 1 diabetes and hyperglycemic states in children and adolescents". Professor Mona Salem, conference president, and Professor Mona Mamdouh Hassan, conference secretary general, along with board members of the Egyptian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ESPED) welcomed 500 physicians from all around Egypt who are involved in the care of children and adolescents in University hospitals, health insurance clinics, and primary health care clinics. No registration fees were requested for attendance including coffee breaks, lunch, conference bags and certificates.
The main goal of the meeting was to discuss and exchange expertise regarding difficult clinical issues in pediatric diabetes; and to highlight and advocate for improving the quality of life in children and adolescents with diabetes in Egypt.

The first day of the conference comprised 4 sessions which included seven presentations in the 1st 2 sessions, free paper oral presentations in the 3rd session, and ended by a "Meet the Expert" in the 4th session. The presentations included important clinical issues in diabetes and hyperglycemia: Management of the child with uncontrolled diabetes, Type 1 diabetes at schools, Psychological aspects in the education of children with type 1diabetes, Use of technology in diabetes management, Stress hyperglycemia, Prediabetes and Diabetes registry. All 7 presentations were interactive and were delivered by eminent ISPAD members: Prof. Carine De Beaufort, general secretary of ISPAD, Prof, John Gregory, Prof. Andrea Scaramuzza and Dr. Asma Deeb. In the free paper session, delegates from 4 different universities in Egypt had the opportunity to present their research work and  the best presenter, Prof. Basma Abdel Moez from Menia University,  who presented quality of life in children with type 1 diabetes, received  a travel grant  from ESPED to attend ISPAD congress that will be held  in October 2016 this year.  The last session was "Meet the Expert" session during which the entire audience had time to ask different questions in several aspects of pediatric diabetes such as new  insulin therapy, new methods of glucose monitoring, islet cell transplantation, diabetes complications, risky behaviors in adolescence,  and  type 2 diabetes in childhood and its treatment.

The second day of the conference included a brief lecture about diabetes education and nutritional planning for health care professionals, followed by interactive session with children and parents about diabetes education and care. This allowed caregivers to express their issues of concern and provide them with up to date knowledge and available tools for optimum diabetes care as well as correct misconceptions about new trends in management.

The conference was sponsored by Sanofi-Diabetes Care, Novo-Nordisk, Eli-Lilly and a wide exhibition area was provided for those and other pharmaceutical companies, Bayer, EGC, Roche, ABBOTT for the orientation of attending physicians and children caregiversof the tools of diabetes management and care available in Egypt.

The feedback evaluation received from attendees emphasized the effective impact of the meeting which was requested by all to be repeated annually. The conference was recognized by the media as a distinguished scientific meeting addressing diabetes care in children and adolescents in Egypt, and was followed by a press conference that attracted media on a wide scale. This was held by Prof. Mona Salem and Prof Mona El-Samahy to deliver a message through the media to the general population regarding the diabetes medication and management misconceptions.  This was essential to increase the general awareness of the population through professional faculty to deliver proper information about diagnosis and treatment recommendations of diabetes in children and adolescents not through internet and other non-reliable media resources.

Finally, the feedback evaluation received from attendees emphasized the effective impact of the meeting as they benefited from the intensive two days of collaboration and interaction. Also, this collaboration enabled the Egyptian Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ESPED) members to mingle and benefit from the informative sessions and vivid discussions shared with the eminent guest speakers.
We truly appreciate the time and effort given by the ISPAD secretary general, Professor Carine De Beaufort, and all distinguished ISPAD members guest speakers who participated in the conference; and we look forward for future meetings.

Mona Salem,
Conference president and ESPED vice-president
Mona Mamdouh Hassan,
