2016 ASPAE Conference - Report

Khartoum, Sudan, 11-14 March, 2016

The 7th ASPAE meeting was held from the 11th to the 14th of March and was hosted by The Sudanese Childhood Diabetes Association and Sudan Society for Paediatric Endocrinoloy and Diabetes. The Theme was “Towards better care for Diabetes and Endocrine disorders in Africa from newborns to Adolescence”. There were 350 attendees from 15 countries including Africa, Europe, Australia, The Gulf, UK and US. We had speakers sponsored by both ISPAD and ESPE. Almost 50 papers were presented orally in addition to posters and 2 workshops on diabetes and growth.
 
Topics that were covered included neonatal endocrinology, adolescent care, diabetes, bone health including rickets, growth disorders, thyroid disorders including screening and endemic goiter and others. There was also a symposium on how to improve HBA1c Africa with presentations from various African countries where the main speaker was Dr Ragnar Hanas from ISPAD. We made a study visit to the Sudan Childhood Diabetes Centre that has not yet opened – an impressive facility dedicated to pediatric diabetes.
