David Dunger

has won the ISPAD Prize of Achievement 2017


David Dunger received training in Paediatric Endocrinology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street. Between 1986 and 2000 he was Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, and later Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology, at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford.


In 2000, he moved to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, University of Cambridge to take up a Chair in Paediatrics. He has a particular interest in the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes during childhood and adolescence and the genetic environmental interactions which determine size at birth and childhood growth which may be linked to risk for type 2 diabetes.  His research group are co-ordinating the follow up of large paediatric cohorts designed to investigate the genetics and pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications.  He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology awarded him the Andrea Prader Prize in 2012.  More recently he was awarded the James Spence Prize by the RCPCH and gave the Banting Lecture at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference in 2016.  He has published more than 500 peer reviewed papers.
