Allan Drash Clinical Fellowship 2019

Franco Giraudo

was awarded the Allan Drash Clinical Fellowship for 2019

Diagnosed with T1D at age of 7, he has dedicated a large part of his life to work with people with diabetes and their families, as a way to give back the support received. Franco has worked since before start the studies in the field of childhood and adolescent diabetes, as an peer educator in several organizations and then as the regional coordinator of the Young Leaders in Diabetes (YLD), an IDF program.

MD of the University of Chile, he is currently a student of PhD in Medical Sciences and Residency on Pediatrics, doing his doctoral thesis with Dr. Ethel Codner, investigating the effect of hormonal contraception in adolescents with T1D. He is also the medical adviser of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Chile (FDJ), an NGO dedicated to education for patients with T1D and their community, that contain as members an estimated of 50% of the people living with T1D in Chile.

His interest is to be able to generate translational research, taking elements of basic research and applying it to the real life of children and adolescents living with diabetes. At the same time, he is deeply interested in being able to generate an important registry at local and regional level, since unlike many other countries, Chile and Latin America in general, lack reliable information on the health situation of people living with diabetes.

In the future, Dr. Giraudo will continue working at the Institute for Mother and Child Research (IDIMI), of the University of Chile, place of training for children's diabetologists in the country, and the FDJ, mixing the art and science of medicine as a clinician, educator, researcher and professor.

For this reason, Franco consider very important have the opportunity to experience other realities, in other cultures and with other media, about the care of children and adolescents with diabetes. “It is a privilege to be able to learn from ISPAD’s center of excellence and I’m very excited about the idea of taking advantage of this experience”, Franco says.
