ISPAD-LFAC Collaboration - ISPAD 2019

The ISPAD - Life for a Child (LFAC) partnership made it possible for 15 professionals in childhood and adolescent diabetes to attend ISPAD’s 45th Annual Conference in Boston. Participants came from Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico and Saint Lucia.

“LFAC would like to thank ISPAD’s support for the opportunity to bring 15 doctors and other health professionals working on diabetes, from 9 different countries of the American continents, to such a well-organised and interesting ISPAD meeting” - stated Dr. Graham Ogle, Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney and General Manager for the Life for a Child Program. Ogle mentioned that it was the first time for many of these countries to send representatives to this conference.

The standard of clinical care for young people with diabetes, and available resources, vary widely across the Americas. Also, many of these countries have no recent data on incidence and prevalence of diabetes in young people, nor on outcomes. Participation in the meeting and involvement in a number of one-on-one side discussions was invaluable for these ‘local champions’ of their respective countries to learn and exchange ideas and existing best practices. This very successful initiative in Boston highlights the importance of worldwide alliances to improve care and promote research in lower-income countries.

LFAC provides young people, in some of the world's most vulnerable communities, with the insulin, supplies and diabetes education that they need to manage their diabetes. Through partnerships, LFAC are supporting over 21,000 young people living with type 1 diabetes.

ISPAD is a sponsor of this program and has pledged structural support and assistance in the training of pediatricians and healthcare professionals in childhood and adolescent diabetes through its membership network.
