ISPAD Fellowships 2017

ISPAD - JDRF Research Fellowship ($25,000 USD)

This grant is for ISPAD members below age 40, who wish to pursue a career in diabetes related research. It is designed to cover expenses for a 6 month (or longer) visit in an ISPAD member’s Centre of Excellence.  The applicant needs to submit a scientific project which can be - at least partially - accomplished in the given time frame. A letter of support from the member in the host centre should be included.

In partnership with the JDRF we have increased the funding for this competitive fellowship to US$25,000 and expanded from 1 to 4 awards. (Note: one fellowship will be awarded to the most outstanding research presentation from the ISPAD Science School.) The recipient will give credit to JDRF & ISPAD on any publication arising from any work done during the fellowship and will be expected to submit a report of fellowship research to ISPAD within one year of fellowship completion.

Application to Include:

From the Applicant:

  • Applicant’s CV
  • Two personal referee letters from colleagues
  • Description of significance of previous research contributions (maximum 1 page)

  • Description of career aspirations of applicant and rationale for decision to pursue a research experience at the proposed host institution and in association with the proposed supervisor (maximum 1 page)
  • Official letter of support from applicant’s own institution

  • Research proposal (maximum 4 pages)

  • Proposed dates of the visiting fellowship

  • Acknowledgement that any additional funds necessary for visit are available

 From the Host Institution/Supervisor:

  • Official letter from the host institution to support the application

  • Personal letter from the applicant’s supervisor to support the development of the applicant's research

  • Supervisor’s CV

ISPAD's Allan Drash Clinical Fellowship ($5,000 USD): This is the Allan Drash Clinical Fellowship for ISPAD members, MD and non MD, below age 45 and is currently for US$5,000. It is intended for spending time (approximately 6 weeks) at an ISPAD centre of excellence to learn, for example, programmatic issues, clinical care, setting up a program or learning how to set up a clinical study. The ISPAD member who hosts the Drash Clinical Fellow needs to send a letter of support for the applicant, indicating what that individual will be doing in their program. The applicant needs to state the reasons for choosing that centre, and a description of his/her objectives and goals. The funded applicant will be expected to submit a report within 6 months of completion of the fellowship.  NOTE: applicants from developing and middle income nations are encouraged to apply for this award and will be given preference in the review process.

Applications to include:

  • Applicant CV, current place of employment and position
  • The aims/learning objectives of the visit to the centre of excellence and outline of the planned     activities (maximum 1 page)
  • The expected outcome and benefits, particularly to the applicant’s own centre
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s own centre
  • An acceptance letter from the research director/ISPAD member in charge at the nominated centre of excellence
  • Proposed dates of the visiting fellowship
  • Acknowledgement that any additional funds necessary for the visit are available
