ISPAD Newsletter 12/2017

No. XI / December 2017

A message from the President

As 2017 draws to a close, I look back at a year of many accomplishments for ISPAD. Recently, I was privileged to represent ISPAD at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi (in conjunction with the International Diabetes Federation meeting), at which Eli Lilly and Company renewed its partnership with the Arab Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ASPED), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), and the Gulf Group for the Study of Diabetes (GGSD) to enhance awareness and support diabetes education programs in the region.

As of January 2018, Professor Philip Zeitler will assume the mantle as editor-in-chief of Pediatric Diabetes. I am thrilled to know that he will be assisted by Fergus Cameron and Sabine Hofer as associate editors for their respective regions of the world. The work of revising and updating the ISPAD guidelines for publication in 2018 is well underway, and I invite our members to read the guidelines on the ISPAD website and offer constructive comments.

At the International Diabetes Federation meeting, David Maahs, Carine de Beaufort and I had productive meetings with industry representatives and colleagues from Africa.

While in some parts of the world, patients with type 1 diabetes are being managed with hybrid closed loop insulin delivery systems, children in Africa and elsewhere are dying because diabetes is still undiagnosed, and access to insulin and other vital supplies continues to be an enormous challenge. Friends, there is much work to be done!

I wish to take this opportunity to wish my ISPAD friends and colleagues throughout the world Seasons Greetings, Peace and Good Health in the New Year.

Joseph Wolfsdorf
ISPAD President
