ISPAD NEWS No V / May 2019

A message from ISPAD's President

As May draws to an end, I hope all are making plans for our Scientific Meeting in Boston: a very good number of abstracts have been received so far.

I draw your attention to a great step forward in diabetes care which is the “Time in Range Consensus Statement” led by Tadej Battelino, Thomas Danne and Moshe Philip. It has now been endorsed by ADA as well as ISPAD; and will be presented at ADA next month and has been accepted for publication in “Diabetes Care”.

ISPAD Executive Board and Advisory Council will have meetings at ADA in June. The joint ADA/ISPAD Symposium is on Monday afternoon, June 10, 14:15-16:15, Understanding Heterogeneity in Pediatric Diabetes—First Step to Improving Outcomes. It is chaired by Ingrid Libman and David Maahs and speakers are Dana Dabelea, Andrea Steck, Maria Redondo and Silva Arslanian. There is also a discussion session Screening for Complications in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes - are we on the right path? on Friday June 7, 11:30-12:30, chaired by Petter Bjornstad and Katharine Garvey with presentations by myself and Des Schatz.

Thanks to ISPAD's historian, Stu Brink for the recent update on our website.

Lastly in my April newsletter message, I referred to the terrible events in Sri Lanka but failed to acknowledge the similar tragedy which occurred in Christchurch. Terrorism is to be deplored in all its guises.

ISPAD 2019 - Scientific Program

The program for the 45th annual ISPAD scientific meeting has been developed with the theme “The future of pediatric diabetes care and research starts NOW!”.

Advances in the care of young persons with diabetes are based on rigorous basic and clinical science that increases knowledge and understanding and leads to innovation in practice and care delivery. In addition to daily oral and poster sessions featuring new work in 15 distinct themes, each day will begin with a plenary session by world renowned investigators, followed by parallel symposia both in the morning and afternoon sessions devoted to major topics in basic and clinical science followed by clinical care applications.

The scope is ambitious, ranging from Family Education to Beta Cell Regeneration to Closing the Loop, just to name a few sessions, and is intended to attract and inform all members of diabetes multi-disciplinary care teams. Time has been deliberately allotted to allow delegates an opportunity to visit the exhibition area and for networking between sessions. The preliminary program (and ALL speakers have already confirmed their attendance) is available for viewing on the iPlanner.

We look forward to welcoming you to Boston and to an exciting and interactive ISPAD meeting!

Conference Resource Platform - Highlighted Chapters

Type 1 Diabetes in Preschools Children and in Adolescents

During the entire year 2019, we will facilitate your guidance through the ISPAD Guidelines 2018 by focusing at least once a month on a special chapter!

This month we are focusing on two new chapters!

Diabetes in Preschool Children
Preschool children are dependent on others for all aspects of their care. Diabetes during early childhood creates a psychosocial challenge for the families of these children. Successful management of infants and toddlers with diabetes depends on a well functioning and educated family, the availability of a diabetes health care team experienced in the treatment of these youngsters, and the involvement of the extended family, childcare personnel and others who play a role in their daily care.

For the families (primarily parents), diabetes teams, and other caregivers, including school and day-care staff members and babysitters, diabetes treatment is a constant challenge. Optimizing glycemic control for children in this age group often requires treatment using strategies that differ from those employed for older children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. These strategies need to take into consideration the cognitive, motor, and social immaturity of preschool children as well as their small body size and growth pattern.

Read more about the challenges that families of the youngest patients with diabetes face and how health-care professionals could support them in the ISPAD Guidelines chapter.

Chapter 17: Diabetes in Adolescents

Puberty is being recognized as one of the most challenging developmental stages of life. Adolescence is the transitional phase of development between childhood and emerging adulthood that incorporates the biological and psychosocial changes of puberty. It poses unique challenges on the individual with diabetes, the family, and the diabetes care team.

Therefore this ISPAD chapter focuses solely on Diabetes in Adolescents and aims to explain the challenges above, propose advice to solve or avoid them, and highlights the adolescents’ needs, including a need for independence, diabetes education about sexual health and contraception, alcohol and drug intake, and transition into adulthood and adult care. It’s a must read for any diabetes team member, both pediatric and adult care specialists.
