JDRF ISPAD fellowship 2019

Emily Sims

was awarded the ISPAD JDRF Fellowship for 2019

Emily K. Sims MD, MS is a physician scientist specializing in pediatric endocrinology, with a long-term goal of addressing clinically relevant problems in diabetes utilizing molecular discovery. Her research focus revolves around the investigation of molecular mechanisms contributing to β cell dysfunction and the development of diabetes, as well as the identification and verification of circulating biomarkers of β cell dysfunction.  Specific areas that Dr. Sims is studying include:  1) the role of cytokine-induced microRNAs in beta cell death and dysfunction; 2) the role of beta cell extracellular vesicles and their molecular cargo in the pathology of developing diabetes, as well as their potential as noninvasive biomarkers of beta cell health; 3) the role and biomarker potential of dysfunctional proinsulin processing in different stages of type 1 diabetes; and 4) contributions of intrinsic beta cell dysfunction to type 1 diabetes development. She hopes to ultimately utilize knowledge gained for development of biomarkers and β cell-targeted therapeutics that allow for a more tailored approach to treatment of patients with or at-risk for diabetes.
