Parent Guide T1D Care in Australian Schools

The Parent Guide was launched to over 150 Australian child diabetes professionals at the 12th annual APS ISPAD diabetes workshop in Newcastle Australia to great acclaim and interest. It is an advocacy document based upon ISPAD guidelines to advise parents of their basic human rights and how to best navigate an increasingly cloudy Australian school system with (unfortunately) many vested interests. Parents are delighted. We are very pleased to uphold ISPAD ideals of advocacy, science and education. The honorary ISPAD lawyer described the parent guide as ”fantastic”!

At the workshop there was unanimous consensus to:

  1. Make BG targets at school on our DMP to 4-8mmol/l (ISPAD school guidelines (4-10mmol/l). Although this is a significant shift from the 2018 guidelines, it seems to be a superior target so I hope that ISPAD CPCG authors support this?
  2. Uphold ISPAD level 2 education and training to be individualised  and  provided by the child’s diabetes team compared to Diabetes Australia model proposing to Government that Level 2  be not individualised and provided by workers under their care.

Regional Australia really appreciate the ISPAD international consensus statements and position statements being so clearly written in the best interests of children to hopefully provide best outcomes.

Thank you all for your contributions and feel free to use this document as you wish for your countries.
