ISPAD Prize for Innovation in Pediatric Diabetes Care

Peter Adolfsson

has won the ISPAD Prize for Innovation in Pediatric Diabetes Care 2017

Dr. Peter Adolfsson, MD, PhD is a Senior Physician at the hospitals of Halland, Kungsbacka and Halmstad, both units holding larger amounts of patients using insulin pumps, CGM and FGM. He received his medical training at the Sahlgrenska Academy of the Gothenburg University and, subsequently, went on to specialize in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine.

His scientific activities focus on the impact of diabetes technology but also on exercise and diabetes in general and sometimes also on physical activity beneath surface – scuba diving. Peter is part of the JDRF-project “PEAK: T1D Performance in Exercise and Knowledge”, a global project aiming at creating guides about exercise and diabetes in a global context.

As an active member of the pediatric scientific community on a national and international scale, Dr. Adolfsson also co-authored the section of the ISPAD Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines related to Exercise in children and adolescents with diabetes.

He is also the creator of different educational and pedagogical tools as a CGM step 1-2-3 Guide (Dexcom), globally launched during the ISPAD conference in Valencia, Spain, 2016. Recently he has also created a web based Libre Guide, now used in Scandinavia.

Dr. Adolfsson was the official physician of the Swedish women’s national football team for nine years and as such he participated in three European Championships, two World Championships and once in the Olympic Games.

Being a sport physician brings a coaching style towards a target where definition and continuous work on motivation are central concepts. This coaching style is also implemented into his clinical practice.

Peter is one of the original founders of Diasend and participated as a board member of this company until the company merged with Glooko 2016 – during these 11 years he persistently sought to make improvements from a clinician's perspective.
