A message from ISPAD's President and Past-President

I am greatly honored and very excited to become the new President of ISPAD. I have been inspired during my year as President Elect on the Executive Board and Advisory Council: it has been a pleasure to work with you all.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Joe Wolfsdorf who as President, has shown outstanding vision and clear leadership for ISPAD. He has served ISPAD’s mission unswervingly, steering the course of advocacy for all children and young people with diabetes globally. This was demonstrated so clearly by ISPAD visiting India, the country with the second highest population of childhood diabetes. Always warm and gentlemanly, Joe has fostered many new projects and ideas; and expansion of ISPAD for all healthcare professionals looking after children with diabetes.

Kim Donaghue
ISPAD President 2018-2020

Because ISPAD had never before hosted a conference on the Indian subcontinent, I confess I had some trepidation about whether the conference would be well attended. My concerns were unfounded, and I was profoundly gratified to participate in and preside over a wonderfully successful 44th Annual Conference whose theme “Reaching the Unreached” was attended by 1035 delegates from 69 countries, including 472 from India, 26 and 18 from Bangladesh and Iran, respectively. If not for some difficulties obtaining visas in a timely fashion, attendance would undoubtedly have been even greater.

The resounding success of this conference can be attributed to the savvy, hard work and careful planning of the local conveners, Drs. Anju Virmani and Banshi Saboo and their scientific committee, together with Franck Brizé and colleagues from K.I.T. Group, and the local team from KW Conferences. To all, we owe our profound gratitude for their tireless efforts. Their responsiveness and meticulous attention to innumerable details – both large and small – ensured that more than 1,000 delegates from all over the globe had a marvelous educational, cultural, culinary, and social experience in Hyderabad. We cannot hold you accountable for the Friday night traffic in Hyderabad! There were many highlights (click on ISPAD 2018 - Conference Highlights in this newsletter) – among them the Udaan troupe of 21 dancers (all happen to have type 1 diabetes) who entertained us at the opening ceremony. The children travelled by train nearly 600 kilometers from Aurangabad to Hyderabad to entertain us with a variety of classical and folk dances that captured the color and energy of India and its youth. These children from poor families in remote villages are supported by Dr. Archana Sarda and CDiC. They stole my heart and reminded me why I am deeply committed to the ISPAD mission.
