International Diabetes Federation

The International Diabetes Federation was established in 1950. They aim to support the development of health professionals and help people with diabetes understand their condition. Their Education Programme supports the development of health professionals and helps people with diabetes understand their condition.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) have released a new policy brief providing recommendations for advocates, healthcre professionals, and policymakers to advance type 1 diabetes screening and early diagnosis.

In 2024, 9.15 million people were living with type 1 diabetes globally, with 69% aged 20–59, 23% living in low- and middle-income countries, and more than half of new diagnoses occurring in people aged 20 or older.

Type 1 diabetes develops in stages over months or years before diagnosis. Understanding these stages can help healthcare providers identify individuals at risk and intervene earlier.

The IDF–ISPAD policy brief:

  • Highlights the global impact of type 1 diabetes

  • Underscores the severe and potentially life-threatening consequences of late diagnosis

  • Showcases techniques to screen and potentially delay disease progression

  • Provides policy recommendations to improve screening and early diagnosis

  • Shares lived experiences from people with type 1 diabetes across regions

ISPAD and IDF believe that education is integral to diabetes management and care. All healthcare professionals need access to proven, effective, and professional educational materials focused on diabetes care. These resources aim to improve the expertise of educators and health professionals.
