Diabetes in Less Resourced Settings

This interest group is the perfect platform for defining the current challenges and gaps in diabetes care in limited resource settings and accordingly bridging these gaps to optimize diabetes care worldwide.

IMPORTANT NEWS:

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Anju Virmani together with Dr. Yasmine Elhenawy and Tinotenda  Dzikiti will be leading the SIG" Diabetes in limited resource setting.”

Dr. Anju is a  senior consultant of  Endocrinology primarily located in New Delhi, India. She is the first pediatric endocrinologist in Delhi since 1994. She is the founder president of the Indian Society for Pediatric & Adolescent Endocrinology (ISPAE). She is the program director of ISPAE Diabetes Education and Learning (IDEAL) and the Initiative for Diabetes Education & Awareness in Schools (IDEAS). She is the current Advisor of the IAP Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention Academy (NCDPA) and Lead, program area NCD-Diabetes of International Pediatric Association (IPA). Dr. Anju was the president of ISPAD Annual Meeting (2018), contributor to Guidelines since 2000, lead author “Diabetes care in limited resource settings” in 2022 Guidelines.

It is time to take action and change the sad narrative of T1D in limited resource setting and advocate for an equitable T1D  across the globe.

We are stronger together, so it's time to join and help in shaping a brighter future.


This group brings together professionals passionate about optimizing diabetes care worldwide and creating a better world for children, adolescents, and young adults with diabetes.

Joining the Diabetes in Less Resourced Settings SIG offers a valuable opportunity to enhance your professional skills, contribute to meaningful research, and be part of a supportive and dynamic community dedicated to improving diabetes care in underserved regions.

This Special Interest Group is the starting point to create the infrastructure needed to optimize diabetes care in less-resourced settings. It could help change the current alarming situation and contribute to achieving the SDG target. African delegates will be invited from each country (HCPS, Advocate).

  5. Infrastructure of the Interest group:

    The delegates will be responsible for defining the real-world data about the situation of diabetes including:

    ➢ Epidemiological data if available
    ➢ structure of diabetes care (who deliver the care, structure of the diabetes team)
    ➢ Available treatment (types of insulin, mode of insulin delivery, glucose monitoring, role of governmental support)
    ➢ Situation regarding diabetes awareness
    ➢ Education and training of HCP, providers and people living with diabetes

Activities

  1. Epidemiological Studies: Conduct studies to gather real-world data on diabetes care in less resourced settings.
  2. Educational Programs: Develop and disseminate educational materials and training programs tailored to local needs.
  3. Resource Provision: Collaborate with organizations to supply essential diabetes care resources like insulin and glucose monitoring strips.
  4. Advocacy and Support: Represent the SIG at international conferences and forums, advocating for better resources and support.

Expectations for members

  1. Active Participation: Engage in regular meetings, discussions, and activities organized by the Diabetes in Less Resourced Settings SIG.
  2. Guideline Review: Contribute to the periodic review and updating of guidelines for diabetes management in less resourced settings.
  3. Content Development: Assist in creating and sharing educational resources and training programs and be the voice of the less-resourced seetings at the ISPAD Annual Conference.
  4. Advocacy and Outreach: Support advocacy initiatives aimed at improving diabetes care and support in underserved regions.
