The ISPAD non-clinician Award

This award identifies and honors non-clinicians* from around the world who have developed projects with a broad impact, thus contributing to improving and transforming the lives of many young people with diabetes. The project selected must have impacted the lives of several children, adolescents, or young adults (rather than an isolated project that contributed to the well-being of one individual with diabetes). The award will be given based on the nominee's work in leadership, commitment, compassion in care, partnership, breadth and depth of efforts, and impact.

2026 ISPAD Hero Award Winner, France

Sylvia Lion, is an advisor/consultant to organizations. Sylvia, graduated from the Pharmacy Faculty of Nancy, France and a 3rd cycle of the Business School, Institut Superieur de Gestion in Paris. Sylvia is currently serving the SFD (Société Francophone du Diabète) and its Foundation regarding the international relations and partnership projects. Sylvia spent her career in the pharmaceutical industry, from national to international positions, in a wide range of products from OTC to medical devices and specialties as well in different geographical areas with a focus on diabetes. Her various positions gave her the opportunity to realize strategic programs and long term partnerships with both lay and professional organizations.

While evolving in these professional positions, Sylvia co founded with a group of thought leaders the Diabetes Education Study Group of EASD, a pilot group dedicated to Patient Education and developing approaches and tools for the Health Care Team. Co author of articles around this subject, she gave conferences and organized workshops to educate and promote the concept. Sylvia supported the development of the IDF Young leader program (Europe & Global) as well and several Humanitarian organizations and initiatives in crisis and non-crisis situations.

Sylvia is member of number of professional and patient organizations including the European Association of Diabetes (EASD), the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). Sylvia is an honorary member of EASD and ISPAD Sylvia is a past Board member of EURADIA, an alliance of NGOs and Private entities to promote Diabetes research to the EU Commission and past Vice President of SWEET, a pediatric group to improve quality of care in Children and currently involved with EUDF (European Diabetes Forum). More recently Sylvia was serving ISPAD (International Society of Pediatric Diabetes) Board as corporate partner advisor, to UNFM (Université Numérique Francophone Mondiale) as program coordinator and to PCDE (Primary Care Diabetes Europe).

Sylvia has received distinguished service awards from IDF, IDF Europe, ISPAD, PCDE and CWD, as well as the EASD Albert Renold Medal.

How to nominate a candidate for this prize?

Nominations for this category can be submitted by ISPAD members. A person can be nominated only by a third party.

The nominator should provide the documnets below in English:

  1. Letter from the person/institution issuing the nomination specifying the reason for the nomination; contact details and affiliation of person/institution issuing the nomination and contact details and affiliation of the nominee
  2. CV of the nominee

Eligibility criteria

  • Not working as a healthcare professional, e.g., not working as a patient's primary caregiver in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, clinic, or patient's home
  • Implementing a project that benefits a large group of people with diabetes rather than an individual
  • Candidates can be from any country
  • There are no age restrictions
  • ISPAD membership is not required

 

*Someone not working as a healthcare professional, e.g., not working as a patient's primary caregiver in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, clinic, or patient's home.
